Aliens and Agents: The House at 3 Regent Square
IMLR, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU, Room G37
Speakers: Charmian Brinson, Clare George, Marian Malet (London)
Talk / Walk
A talk on the hidden history of this Bloomsbury house, a hive of activity for 1930s anti-fascist refugees attempting to expose the activities of the Nazi regime, and a magnet for German informers and MI5 agents spying on the refugees. The talk will be illustrated by archival material from the University of London’s Germanic Studies Archives on the writers and activists who lived and met there.
After the talk the group will walk a short tour around some of the other Bloomsbury locations of importance for understanding the history of the 1930s refugees, ending with the house at Regent Square. In the event that bad weather prevents us from doing a walking tour, participants will have an opportunity to view selected treasures from the exile archive collections, and to listen to some BBC German Service propaganda songs written and performed by Austrian exiles during WW2.
