Film: The Resisters – Testimony of the White Rose
GOETHE-INSTITUT LONDON 50 Princes Gate Exhibition Road SW7 2PH London
Interviews with members and supporters of the anti-Nazi resistance group “Weiße Rose (White Rose) around Hans and Sophie Scholl give detailed and moving insight in the group’s motivations and way of operating.
Ahead of our screening of Five Last Days on 28 February, we are showing Katrin Seybold’s documentary The Resisters—Testimony of the White Rose, which places Sophie and her brother Hans Scholl in the context of the titular resistance group and its resistance against the Nazis. The Scholl siblings operated within a wider network of resistance fighters who were active all over Germany. The Weiße Rose consisted of a group of friends and their siblings, who felt the need to act against the criminal, war-obsessed Nazi regime. They produced and distributed 6 pamphlets thereby risking their lives. Many of them were arrested and put on trial in the notorious people’s court. Hans and Sophie Scholl, Christoph Probst, Alexander Schmorell, Kurt Huber, and Willi Graf were sentenced to death and executed between 23 February and 12 October 1943. Through a combination of original documents, photographs and above all interviews with surviving members of the Weiße Rose as well as relatives and friends, the film explores what motivated the resistance of the group’s members and how they operated.
