Mahler at the Met
Austrian Cultural Forum, 28 Rutland Gate, London
Lecture by Patrick Bade. Between 1908 and 1910 Gustav Mahler conducted performances at the Metropolitan Opera that set new standards and evoked paeans of praise from the New York critics. Despite declining health and fierce competition from the thrusting young conductor Arturo Toscanini, Mahler succeeded in imposing discipline on the spectacular casts at his disposal at the Met and stamping his personality on the company. With the aid of historic recordings Patrick Bade will evoke these legendary performances. Patrick is an art historian, lecturer and writer and a passionate collector of historic recordings.
