Metropolis (1927) + intro by Professor Erica Carter, King’s College London

BFI Southbank

Fritz Lang’s stunning sci-fi epic about the conflict between capital and labour is still a treat on the big screen.

Set in 2026 (!), Lang’s allegorical sci-fi epic about the conflict between capital and labour is memorable primarily for its visualisation of the futuristic city of the title, a dystopian society dependent on industrialised slavery. The towering skyscrapers on view have been much imitated; likewise the workers’ subterranean catacombs. This is the long version of the film, restored after it was discovered in 2008.
