Screening of ‘Karl Marx City’ + director Q&A at Bertha DocHouse
The Bertha DocHouse Screen Curzon Bloomsbury The Brunswick, London, WC1N 1AW
On Tuesday, 5th December, we have a one-off event screening of Karl Marx City, a deeply personal film from co-directors Petra Epperlein & Michael Tucker. Twenty-five years after the collapse of the German Democratic Republic, filmmaker Petra Epperlein returns to Chemnitz (formally Karl Marx City) to find out the truth about her late father’s suicide and his rumoured Stasi past. Had he been an informant for the secret police? Was her seemingly idyllic childhood a lie? Scouring the Stasi’s extensive archives for answers, Karl Marx City is a black and white voyage questioning Epperlein’s own nostalgia for her East German past. Further information about the film, including a trailer, can be found here:http://dochouse.org/cinema/screenings/karl-marx-city-dir-qa.
Capturing the paranoid atmosphere of the former society where every action and thought was suspect, this special one-off screening of Karl Marx City will be followed by an in-person Q&A with co-directors Petra Epperlein & Michael Tucker.
