Two Refugee Artists in Search of Identity; Milein Cosman and Harry Weinberg by Dr Ines Schlenker
Ben Uri Gallery and Museum 108A Boundary Road Off Abbey Road London NW8 0RH
Dr. Ines Schlenker will be talking about Two Refugee Artists in Search of Identity - Milein Cosman and Harry Weinberger. Milein Cosman (born 1921) and Harry Weinberger (1924-2009) both left their native Germany in the 1930s and eventually settled in England. Although receiving their artistic training in their country of refuge they kept a fierce independence and refused to adapt to what they found inacceptable in the English art world. This lecture will trace how both artists developed their distinctive artistic identity that led them to execute two very different portraits of a mutual friend, the writer Iris Murdoch. Dr Ines Schlenker is an independent art historian with a special interest in degenerate and émigré art. She has just completed a book on Milein Cosman. Tickets are £5 for students, pensioners or those receiving benefits and £10 full price.
